5:2 diet - day 1

Apologies for the title of this blog, but I thought it pretty much sums up what I need to write about.  But first let's get the introductions out of the way.

I'm Suzy...a 40 something expat living and working as a teacher in Hong Kong.  Not really the healthiest city in the world for many reasons, one of which is the quality of the food on offer.  Now before you get on your soapbox I know cooking at home is the best way to eat healthily, but as anyone who has ever lived in HK for any length of time will testify, the lifestyle over here is hectic to say the least.  I leave home for work at 6am and arrive back anything between 7pm and 11pm depending on whether I have college/choir/nail appointment after work.  So, eating 'on the run' is pretty much inevitable at some point during my day.

Breakfast is a cereal bar at work, but sometimes (to my shame) a delicious sticky bun, washed down with a sugar-laden soy drink (or two).  I often eat a second cereal bar when my kids are having snack time as it's too much temptation watching them eat.  I get lunch provided at work which is great but not particularly enjoyable on occasions, so I usually end up tacking a peanut butter doorstep onto the rice + meat combo on offer.  Dinner is often eaten in a hurry somewhere before dashing off to my after-school activity.  On the rare occasions I eat at home I'm usually too tired to cook anything healthy so it might be a cheese sandwich (heaven) or instant noodles.

All of which has lead me to putting on half a stone since September (when I started at my new school).  Not drastic you might say, but if I don't do something about it now, it will probably be a stone by New Year.  A few years ago I weighed about 71kgs and managed to lose about 13kgs through Weight Watchers.  Considering I am only 163cms that's a lot of extra weight to be carrying.  I currently weigh 60kgs and my target is to get down to 54kgs.  I'm sure I can do it, but thought that having to update on here would keep me motivated.

So....I've just started the 5:2 diet which, if you're reading this blog, you are doing too :D  Good luck to us all!
